Sambhal mosque president detained for statement on violence
The police in Sambhal have taken the president of the Shahi Jama Masjid, Zafar Ali, into custody. This is related to an investigation into violence that occurred on November 24 last year. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) is questioning Ali about the events surrounding the violence. When asked if Ali was under arrest, Anuj Kumar Tomar, the in-charge of Sambhal Kotwali, clarified that he is in custody for a statement and not formally arrested. The mosque has been a focal point of tension since a petition claimed it was built on the site of an ancient Hindu temple. The violence on November 24 erupted during protests against a court-ordered survey of the mosque. The unrest resulted in four deaths and many injuries, including among police officers. Sambhal remains uneasy as authorities continue their investigation into the violence.
