Sankar Subramanian upsets World No. 2 Antonsen

Sankar Subramanian Muthusamy, a rising star in Indian badminton, had a remarkable victory at the Swiss Open 2025. The 21-year-old player knocked out World No. 2 Anders Antonsen in the Round of 16 on March 20. He won the match in a thrilling 57 minutes with scores of 18-21, 21-12, 21-5. Sankar's journey has been impressive. He grew up in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and has made a name for himself in badminton since his junior days. At 17, he reached the finals of the 2021 Uganda International tournament. He also earned a silver medal at the 2022 BWF World Junior Championships. His recent win against Antonsen is his biggest success so far. Sankar has been climbing the BWF rankings and aims to become a regular competitor in international tournaments. He trained with his childhood coach, Aravind Samiappan. Despite his excellent performance against Antonsen, Sankar's Swiss Open run ended in the quarterfinals. He lost to Christo Popov of France with scores of 10-21, 14-21. This was Sankar's second quarterfinal appearance this year, having previously reached the last eight at the Thailand Masters in January.
