Saraswatipuram Extension residents demand improved road conditions

Residents of Fourth Street in Saraswathipuram Extension, Pammal, are facing several problems, including poor road conditions, stray cattle, and waste dumping. They say the roads have not been properly maintained for many years. One resident, Saravanan B., noted that it has been five to six years since any significant work was done on the roads. The Naatu Canal divides the Second and Fourth Streets, but there is no bridge to connect them. As a result, residents often dump their household waste in the canal and along the streets. The Greater Chennai Corporation has not collected this waste in a timely manner, leading to health issues from mosquitoes breeding in the stagnant waste. Saravanan emphasized the need for more education on proper waste disposal and segregation. Stray cattle also pose problems, particularly for school children and office-goers during busy hours. Parents express concern about their children's safety while navigating around these animals. An engineer from the Tambaram Corporation said the civic body has invited tenders to repair damaged roads in the area, with a total budget of nearly ₹138 crore. A survey is currently taking place to identify all streets needing repairs. The engineer added that the canal is managed by the Public Works Department, which limits the Tambaram Corporation's involvement to minor repairs. The Corporation aims to address the waste dumping and stray cattle issues as well.
