Sassoon Hospital's robotic surgery system remains unused
Sassoon General Hospital in Pune has not yet used its new robotic surgery system, which was received about five months ago. The robot and its components were delivered in November 2024, but the hospital is still waiting for training and renovations to be completed. Doctors are currently undergoing training to operate the robot. So far, nine surgeons have been trained, with more sessions planned for the future. Rohit Gupta, a company representative, mentioned that the modular operating theater where the robot will be installed is still being renovated. He hopes robotic surgeries can begin by April or May 2025. Many private hospitals in Pune are already using robotic systems for surgeries. Robotic surgery is known for helping patients recover faster. Dr. Eknath Pawar, dean of BJ Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital, explained that additional surgeons still need training. The modular OT also needs approval from the city’s civil engineering and electrical departments. Robotic surgery is an advanced method that uses robotic arms for operations. This technique allows surgeons to perform complex surgeries with greater precision. It can assist in surgeries on hard-to-reach organs, including the prostate and kidneys. Dr. Anant Bidkar, a former department head, pointed out that this technology can lead to quicker recovery and lower costs compared to private hospitals.
