Saudi Arabia to enhance IAEA nuclear oversight by December 2024

Saudi Arabia plans to enhance nuclear oversight by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) by ending its light-touch monitoring under the Small Quantities Protocol. This change is expected to take effect by the end of December 2024. The kingdom aims to implement a Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement, which includes more rigorous inspections. Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman confirmed the request to the IAEA during its annual General Conference. IAEA chief Rafael Grossi praised Saudi Arabia's decision, stating it will improve verification of the peaceful use of nuclear material. However, it remains uncertain if Saudi Arabia will adopt the Additional Protocol for even stricter oversight.
