Savy King debuts for Angel City FC in hometown

Savy King, a young soccer player from Agoura, California, is thrilled to be back home with Angel City FC. Last week, she made her debut for the club in their season opener against San Diego Wave FC. A crowd of around 40 to 50 family and friends watched her play at BMO Stadium. King, who is 20 years old, started her soccer journey later than most. She was the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NWSL draft, selected by Bay FC. After a season at North Carolina, she was traded to Angel City and signed a two-year contract extension through 2028. The match was special for King. She expressed excitement and nerves about playing in front of a hometown crowd. Last season, she played against Angel City, but now she gets to wear their colors. King also shared that she is proud of her performance and her teammates. Savy began playing soccer at age 10, after trying various sports. Encouraged by a competitive friend, she decided to give soccer a chance, and it quickly became her passion. Initially a forward, she transitioned to defense and now plays center back for Angel City. King paired with teammate Sarah Gorden at center back in the recent match. Gorden praised King's defending skills and athleticism, highlighting their new partnership on the field. Angel City's starting lineup on opening day was notably young, averaging 24 years and about 5 months. Seven players were 23 years old or younger, reflecting the team's focus on youth. Angel City FC's next match will be against Portland Thorns on Friday at 7 p.m. in Oregon. It will be available to watch on Prime Video.
