SC permits RG Kar victim's parents to seek investigation
The Supreme Court has allowed the parents of a doctor killed at RG Kar Medical College to seek further investigation into the case. They want the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to look into the involvement of others, including the former principal of the hospital, Sandip Ghosh. The main suspect, Sanjay Roy, was sentenced to life in prison in January. The parents filed their request for a deeper inquiry while the Supreme Court deferred discussions on safety recommendations for healthcare workers until May. A special task force set up by the Supreme Court identified the need for improved safety for medical professionals after the violent incident. It found that existing laws already offer enough protection and that 24 states have laws against violence toward healthcare workers. The task force recommended several measures to enhance security in hospitals. These included creating security committees to assess risks and improve safety, especially in large hospitals. They suggested round-the-clock centralized security control, deployment of Quick Response Teams, and better CCTV coverage in critical areas. The report also emphasized the need for regular police presence in hospitals known for security issues. Additionally, the task force called for training for medical staff on their legal rights and procedures in cases of violence. Specific attention was given to the safety of female healthcare workers, especially during night shifts. Recommendations include the formation of Internal Complaints Committees and better security measures to create a safer environment for all staff.
