Scaffolding in Halifax harms Obladee wine bar's business
A Halifax wine bar is struggling due to scaffolding that has been up for almost two years. The owner of Obladee wine bar, Christian Rankin, says the scaffolding makes it hard for customers to see the bar and has hurt business. The scaffolding was put up in July 2023 after the Halifax Regional Municipality told the building's owner to fix its crumbling facade. Rankin feels discouraged as the structure is blocking visibility. He mentioned, "It's an eyesore and people can't tell that we're open." The wine bar has lost business, especially during patio seasons, because the outdoor seating area is now unusable. Rankin has asked the property owner to make repairs, but nothing has happened. The building is owned by the Caryi Group, which is dealing with financial troubles. Steve Caryi, the principal owner, died in 2023, and now his family is selling the building. However, Rankin believes the municipality should take action to help before another patio season passes. He stated, "If the building owner is not co-operating, then the city has to step in and do what the building owner won't." The municipality has not yet responded to requests for comment on the situation.
