Scalpers sell DMV appointments in Florida for $250
In Florida's Broward and Miami-Dade counties, some people are scalping DMV appointments for profit. They are charging between $25 and $250 for appointments that are usually free. The Miami-Dade Tax Collector's office has identified a network of scalpers. These individuals book large numbers of appointments under fake names and then sell them. They often use driving schools to secure these appointments. More than 200 of these appointments were booked at a new DMV location in downtown Miami alone. Scalpers use bots and fake accounts to grab the appointments quickly. Many of the fake bookings are registered with the same phone number. Currently, scalping DMV appointments is not illegal in Florida. Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez plans to push for changes to the law. A county commissioner has proposed legislation that would make it a civil offense to sell DMV appointments, with fines up to $500. Officials believe this scalping problem has been going on for a while and are determined to stop it.
