Seafood testing reveals mislabeling of shrimp in New Orleans restaurants ahead of Super Bowl
A recent seafood testing campaign in New Orleans found that some restaurants served foreign shrimp while claiming it was local. This comes despite a new Louisiana law prohibiting such misrepresentation. Sead Consulting tested 24 restaurants and discovered three misrepresented their shrimp as “Gulf” or “authentic.” The company aims to combat the influx of cheap foreign shrimp in the U.S. market. The new Louisiana law, effective this year, imposes heavier fines for false labeling and requires clear country of origin statements on menus. The Louisiana Restaurant Association has been asked to help inform restaurant owners about these regulations.
