Second teen arrested for NYC mom's murder in robbery
A second teenager has been arrested for the deadly shooting of a 57-year-old woman in New York City. The incident happened on September 9 when Ying Zhu Liu was shot in the face while trying to protect her family from two muggers. Police charged 19-year-old Joshua Bell with several crimes, including murder and robbery. He was taken into custody on Friday. The shooting occurred in the hallway of Liu’s family condo in Lower Manhattan. The robbery began when the suspects followed Liu’s husband, Shen Yan, into the elevator of their building. They threatened him with a gun, taking his phone and cash. When the elevator reached the eighth floor, Yan warned his son, Lin Rong Yan, to stay back as the muggers approached. In an attempt to help, Lin Rong Yan was attacked and injured when one of the suspects hit him with the gun. Hearing the disturbance, Liu came out of her apartment. Tragically, one of the muggers then shot her at close range, leading to her death at the scene. Joshua Bell was seen being led away by police on Friday, and he remained silent during the arrest. He had a previous robbery arrest in August 2023. The first suspect arrested, 16-year-old Dante Schaller, is also facing the same charges as Bell and will be prosecuted as an adult. He had ongoing legal issues from an earlier assault case involving a police officer.
