Seechewal wells project nears completion in six villages
Construction of wells using the ‘Seechewal’ model is almost done in six villages near Buddha Dariya. The villages are Lakhowal, Budhewal, Dhanansu, Khasi Khurd, Bhukhari Kalan, and Bhukhari Khurd. These wells will treat sewage from the villages and the treated water will be used for irrigation. Previously, sewage from these villages was being dumped directly into the river, causing pollution. The project is named after MP Balbir Singh Seechewal, an environmentalist who has been actively working to protect the river. Alongside the well construction, work is also progressing on a 3.5 km pipeline to manage sewage from Tajpur village. Currently, Tajpur has no water body, so wastewater was being released directly into Buddha Dariya. More than 60% of the pipeline work is complete, and it will connect to a treatment plant at Tajpur Road. On March 9, state cabinet minister Hardeep Singh Mundia and Seechewal launched the pipeline project. Seechewal also allocated Rs 19 lakh from his fund to set up permanent drainage for Tajpur’s wastewater. He praised his supporters for their efforts, stating that the riverbed has shown signs of life, such as shells. However, he mentioned ongoing challenges with dairy farmers who still dispose of cow dung improperly, which continues to impact the drainage system.
