Selena Gomez samples classic Spanish song with new twist
Selena Gomez and The Marias have released a new song called "Ojos Tristes," which samples a classic track by Spanish singer Jeanette. Jeanette, who became famous in the 1970s and 80s, heard about the new version earlier today. A friend told her that Gomez and Benny Blanco had used her song "El Muchacho de Los Ojos Tristes" and added their own lyrics. Jeanette loved the update. She described it as beautiful and praised the modern twist while keeping the essence of the original song. In her 1981 version, Jeanette sings about a young man with sad eyes who is lonely. In Gomez and Blanco's version, Gomez starts with English lyrics, and then Maria Zardoya sings the original Spanish verse. Zardoya also includes a new second verse that changes the meaning of the song. Jeanette said she was surprised by the lyrical change but appreciated it after listening to the whole track. She also mentioned that she has heard many covers of her songs over the years, with varying quality, but she enjoyed this one. Last week, she collaborated on a new song with artist Lucas Bun. Additionally, Jeanette will be touring Central America soon with the singer Juan Bau. She expressed her gratitude for the continued support she's received over the years. If Gomez and Zardoya ever want her to join them on a version of "Ojos Tristes," she would be happy to do so.
