Sembawang to see new schools and linkway by 2029
Residents in Sembawang can look forward to new facilities and developments by 2029. Health Minister Ong Ye Kung shared these plans on March 23 during the launch of two new attractions at Bukit Canberra. New pre-schools and a primary school will be part of the improvements. The primary school will be built in East Canberra. Mr. Ong mentioned that the Ministry of Education supports this proposal and is optimistic about receiving confirming news soon. For pre-school education, new centers will be set up at two Build-To-Order (BTO) projects. Each will have 300 places. A larger pre-school with 400 places is also planned for East Canberra. This means that Sembawang will add 1,000 pre-school places in the next two years. Additionally, a sheltered linkway will be constructed over Sembawang Way to provide easy access to the Sembawang MRT station. Construction will start soon, and the linkway is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. At the launch event, Mr. Ong introduced the Forest Gym and Canberra Cove. The Forest Gym is the largest outdoor ActiveSG gym in the country. Canberra Cove features water play areas that are popular with children. Mr. Ong mentioned that more amenities will open at Bukit Canberra. These include a dog park, a new public library at the former Admiralty House, and community gardens. Furthermore, the future relocation of Sembawang Shipyard will make way for new waterfront developments, including 8,000 BTO flats and additional private homes. Sembawang's unique charm will also be preserved as some of its historical bungalows may be developed for commercial use, such as restaurants and retail shops. Mr. Ong highlighted the community's distinctive character and connection to nature, which will guide the town's development.
