Senate Democrats oppose GOP funding bill, risking shutdown
Senate Democrats have announced their opposition to a Republican stopgap funding bill, increasing the risk of a government shutdown by the end of the week. They propose a one-month extension for negotiations on a bipartisan spending agreement. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stated that Democrats will not support the House-approved bill, which maintains current funding levels for six months. Instead, they seek time to evaluate individual spending bills. With a shutdown possible if no agreement is reached by Saturday, Senate Republicans need at least eight Democratic votes to overcome procedural hurdles. So far, only one Democrat has shown willingness to support the bill.
