Senate Democrats oppose House GOP funding bill
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced that Senate Democrats will oppose a House GOP funding bill. He stated that Senate Republicans lack the votes needed to pass it, raising concerns about a potential government shutdown. The Senate is considering a continuing resolution to fund the government for six months. Some Democratic senators want more checks on executive power or a shorter-term bill to negotiate a new agreement. The House passed the funding bill, which maintains last year's funding levels but reduces non-defense spending by $13 billion while increasing defense spending by $6 billion. The Senate requires 60 votes to avoid a filibuster, and a shutdown could occur if the bill is not passed by Friday.
