Senate panel reprimands Punjab government over Ejaz Chaudhry
A Senate committee in Pakistan has expressed its anger over the Punjab government's failure to comply with a production order for PTI Senator Ejaz Chaudhry. The committee warned that it could suggest punishment for this violation. Senator Taj Haider, who chaired the meeting, emphasized the need for Chaudhry to be produced before the committee if he is willing. The issue was raised because Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani had previously criticized the government's inaction regarding the senator's order. Ejaz Chaudhry is currently in prison at Lahore's Kot Lakhpat jail. He was indicted in November in connection with riots that occurred on May 9, 2023. During the meeting, there were discussions about security concerns which prevented his appearance. Home Secretary Noor-ul-Amin Mengal confirmed that they received two orders to bring Chaudhry to the Senate but cited health issues as a reason for his non-appearance. It was noted that he had recently undergone heart surgery and had installed stents. The Inspector General of Punjab's prisons stated that they are prepared to bring Chaudhry to the Senate if he wishes to attend, despite his health concerns. Senator Haider reiterated the need to respect the Senate's authority and urged the provincial government to act accordingly.
