Senate passes funding bill to avert government shutdown
Senate Democrats and Republicans have advanced a government funding bill to prevent a partial shutdown. The bill, which extends fiscal 2024 spending levels through the start of fiscal 2026, passed the Senate with a 62-38 vote, including support from 10 Democrats. The bill includes a $6 billion increase in defense spending but reduces non-defense discretionary spending by $13 billion. Immigration and Customs Enforcement will receive nearly $10 billion, reflecting priorities from former President Trump. Senate Majority Leader John Thune criticized Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer for his quick change in stance on the funding bill. The Senate will now consider amendments before a final vote is expected.
