Senior dog abandoned in Central Texas finds safety

A senior dog named Gravey was found abandoned in front of a cemetery in Central Texas. The pit bull mix was spotted by a Good Samaritan who saw him crying on the side of the road but was hesitant to approach because of the dog's poor condition. Tracy Frank, director of SARA (the Society for Animal Rescue & Adoption), was called to help and rescued the dog on March 10. When Frank arrived, she found Gravey lying on the gravel road. His eyes were covered in discharge, making it hard for him to see. Frank was able to feed him and take him to the shelter. The eight-year-old dog showed signs of neglect, such as dirty ears, infected eyes, and overgrown nails. He has since received treatment, including baths for his skin condition and medication for his ears and fleas. Though Gravey had a rough start, he is adjusting well to the shelter, which currently cares for about 750 animals. Frank described him as sweet and friendly, especially with other dogs and children. However, he often paces at the shelter fence, seemingly looking for his previous owner. Gravey will need further veterinary care, including a geriatric checkup and possibly having some teeth removed. The shelter staff hopes to find him a loving home where he can receive plenty of attention and affection. Sadly, Gravey’s story is not unique, as shelters across the U.S. face challenges with a large number of abandoned animals each year.
