Serial bank robber strikes again near Detroit
A man who has been a repeat bank robber and also writes crime novels is facing new charges after allegedly robbing two banks near Detroit. Dorian Trevor Sykes, 41, was arrested on Tuesday, one year after being released from prison. According to a police complaint, Sykes robbed a Credit Union One in Sterling Heights on March 6. He reportedly handed a note to the teller saying, "This is a robbery," and demanded large bills. He left with $10,169 in a black crossover vehicle, believed to be a Mercedes. Fingerprints found at the location matched Sykes. Just six days later, Sykes allegedly struck again at a Chase bank in Lathrup Village. He gave a teller a withdrawal slip that threatened violence if he was not given all the money. He escaped with about $3,400 and was seen getting into a white Rolls Royce SUV. At the time of his recent alleged crimes, Sykes was under federal supervision following his release from prison in February 2024. Previously, he had served time for two bank robberies in August 2019, where he stole a total of $2,030. Despite his history, he has also pursued a career as a crime novelist, writing books such as "King of Detroit" and "Born to Die." Sykes appeared in court on Tuesday and asked to represent himself. His history of criminal activity raises serious concerns among officials about his disregard for the law.
