Seven sentenced to life for TMC candidate's murder

A district court in Barasat has sentenced seven people to life in prison for the murder of Biplab Sarkar, a TMC panchayat candidate. The murder took place in 2018 during the panchayat elections at a party office in Habra. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on each convict. If they do not pay the fine, they will face an extra six months in prison. One of the accused, Sujit Das, is currently on the run from the authorities. During the incident, a group of armed attackers entered the office and opened fire. Sarkar was killed immediately, and a legal cell member, Anup Das, was injured in the attack. The defence lawyer, Dulal Sarkar, announced plans to appeal the verdict in the high court.
