Severe solar storm threatens power grids and navigation systems
The Straits Times — May 10, 2024, 02:00 PM UTC
Summary: A rare G4 geomagnetic storm watch has been issued by the US Space Weather Prediction Center due to five solar energy waves expected to hit Earth from May 10-12. The last G5 storm in 2003 caused power outages in Sweden and damaged transformers in South Africa. Trans-polar flights may be rerouted, and auroras could be visible in parts of Asia, Europe, and North America. Sunspot cluster 16 times wider than Earth is the cause.
