SFI blames GNLU for negligence after student's death
A third-year law student at Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) has died, leading to criticism of the university from the Students' Federation of India (SFI). The SFI accused the administration of neglect regarding medical support on campus. They claimed that the delay in medical assistance contributed to the tragedy. The 21-year-old student from Punjab allegedly died by suicide on March 17. SFI state secretary Nitish Mohan said that the campus lacked essential medical facilities, such as an ambulance, trained staff, and necessary equipment. Students had to break down the door to reach the victim, who was found unresponsive. Dr. Nitin Malik, GNLU's registrar, defended the university's response. He stated that experienced nurses arrived quickly and found the student unresponsive. According to him, a university car was available for emergencies and the victim was rushed to the hospital. GNLU is now waiting for the inquiry report to clarify the situation. Following the incident, GNLU suspended all classes and activities on March 18. Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) S. Shanthakumar expressed condolences in an email, calling the loss a significant blow to the university community. He extended his thoughts and prayers to the student's family and friends.
