Shapovalov advances; Fernandez eliminated at Miami Open
Denis Shapovalov from Canada advanced to the third round of the men's singles at the Miami Open. He defeated Argentina's Thiago Tirante in a close match that lasted just under two hours and 25 minutes. The final score was 6-3, 6-7(1), 7-6(3). This was Shapovalov's first match in the tournament after receiving a bye in the first round. Leylah Fernandez, also from Canada, was eliminated in the women's singles third round. She lost to American Ashlyn Krueger with a score of 6-1, 7-5. Krueger played well, holding her serve throughout the match. Next, Shapovalov will face the third seed, Taylor Fritz, from the United States. Fritz won his last match against Italy's Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets. Fernandez returned to the court later with her doubles partner, Nicole Melichar-Martinez. They lost their match against Sofia Kenin and Lyudmyla Kichenok with a score of 6-2, 7-6(6). In other news, second seeds Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe were set to play in the women's doubles. Felix Auger-Aliassime from Montreal will compete in the men's singles against 15th seed Lorenzo Musetti on Sunday.
