Shark Hanlon names Gavin Sheehan as Hewick's jockey

John 'Shark' Hanlon has announced that jockey Gavin Sheehan will ride Hewick in the upcoming Randox Grand National at Aintree. This decision comes after Hanlon's son, Paddy, previously rode Hewick to victory at Thurles last weekend. Hewick had been without a confirmed jockey for the Grand National, which takes place on April 5. Hanlon considered both Sheehan and regular rider Jordan Gainford before making the final decision. After discussing it with owner T.J. McDonald, they chose Sheehan for his experience. Sheehan has previously won the King George VI Chase on Hewick and is known for his strong performance on important race days. Hanlon emphasized that the decision was difficult and not a reflection on Gainford’s abilities. He stated that Gainford would have future opportunities to ride Hewick. Hewick is currently priced at 20-1 for the Grand National, although some odds are as low as 12-1.
