Sheboygan nonprofit faces building condemnation, must relocate
Kathleen LaBonte, the founder of Sheboygan Area Pay It Forward, received shocking news this past weekend. The nonprofit, which helps the unhoused in Sheboygan, must leave its building by April 15 due to condemnation. The landlord cited serious electrical and structural problems as the reasons for this decision. LaBonte expressed deep concern for the community that relies on their services. The center, open for just over two years, provides food, clothes, and a safe space for many. "I worry, we worry, so much about what’s going to happen to our peers," LaBonte told local media. Regular visitor Corvid Lilim Macias emphasized how essential the center is, saying it feels like family to those who attend. Pay It Forward serves over 60 people at a time and has grown significantly since opening. With the closure looming, LaBonte fears the loss of this crucial support, especially because other local resources are closed on Sundays. Jake Lawlor, another community member, shared his distress, stating that the loss of the center is more than just losing a building; it's losing a vital community hub. The nonprofit is set to close after April 6, allowing time for staff and volunteers to store donated items. Despite the challenges, the community remains hopeful. LaBonte and other supporters are committed to finding a new location and continuing their mission. "We’re hopeful that we can pick right up where we’re leaving off," LaBonte said.
