Sheinbaum responds to Trump's tariff threat, warns of risks to businesses
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on products from Mexico and Canada, along with a 10% tariff on goods from China. This move is part of his first executive orders aimed at addressing illegal immigration and drug trafficking. In response, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum suggested Mexico could retaliate with its own tariffs. She emphasized that drug issues are primarily a U.S. problem and highlighted the risks tariffs pose to businesses on both sides of the border, particularly U.S. automakers. Sheinbaum's stance marks a shift from the previous administration's approach, as she is less inclined to accommodate Trump. She expressed a desire for dialogue and cooperation, stating that both countries should negotiate as equals.
