Shenandoah polling locations may change for election

Two polling places in Shenandoah may be changed if approved by the Schuylkill County Commissioners next week. At a meeting, elections director Albert Gricoski announced that the locations at the Schuylkill County Historical Fire Museum and the Columbia Hose & Steam Fire Company could be updated for the May 20 election. The fire museum, used as a polling site for the third precinct, will move to the Shenandoah High Rise, located at 100 S. Main St. This change is due to the need for more space and better accessibility. Previously, voters had to use an elevator to reach the second floor, which often did not work properly. The first floor has been too cramped to accommodate voters comfortably. Voters from the borough's fifth precinct, who currently vote at the fire company, will instead go to Malocu’s at 601 W. Washington St. The fire company requested this change to allow for quick access to emergency vehicles. Sometimes, voters parked in front of the garage doors, which slowed down fire personnel. In related news, the salary board has approved $5,000 salary increases for assistant district attorneys until a full-time assistant can be hired. However, they decided to delay a vote on incentive pay for three adult probation office employees to gather more information. District Attorney Michael O’Pake mentioned challenges in filling both full-time and part-time assistant positions. He noted that while applications are received, many candidates lack the necessary qualifications. He stressed that offering additional compensation for these roles is a sensible decision that won’t impact the budget adversely.
