For older adults and those with chronic conditions, postherpetic neuralgia can cause ongoing nerve pain long after the rash heals. This pain can interfere with daily life. Other potential complications include an increased risk of heart-related issues, eye damage, and even inflammation of the brain. There is a need for greater awareness about shingles and its risks. A recent survey found that many individuals with chronic health conditions are not aware of their risk for shingles. Health experts emphasize the importance of vaccination, especially for people over 50.
