SHRC urges action on hazardous well in Balaramapuram

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has requested urgent action regarding a dangerous well at the Hantex Processing Centre in Balaramapuram. The well is 30 feet deep and is at risk of collapse, posing a safety hazard. SHRC chairperson Justice Alexander Thomas has instructed local officials, including the district collector and the Hantex Managing Director, to meet and report on the situation within six weeks. There were plans to turn the well into a swimming pool, but progress has stalled. Financial issues at Hantex have hindered any independent safety measures. The Managing Director has asked for disaster relief funds, but no response has been received. A local resident, R Sudha, has expressed concern after part of her wall and land fell into the well, increasing the risks. She has sought help since September 2023, but no actions have been taken so far.
