Sikkim GLOF prompts call for improved disaster risk management and international cooperation
PK Mishra, principal secretary to the Prime Minister, described the 2023 Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) in Sikkim as a wake-up call for disaster risk reduction. He emphasized the need for resilience-building and better coordination among states and central agencies. Mishra noted that previous efforts to manage risks from South Lhonak Lake were inadequate, focusing mainly on scientific assessments. The newly established Committee on Disaster Risk Reduction (CoDRR) aims to improve communication and delegate responsibilities to states while providing central support. The government has identified around 200 high-risk glacial lakes from 7,500 surveyed. Mishra highlighted the importance of international collaboration with experts from countries like Bhutan and Nepal to enhance understanding of GLOF risks and improve response strategies.
