The developers of the Silent Hill 2 remake, Bloober, have shared new insights about the game’s design. During a panel at GDC 2025, they discussed the infamous toilet scene where the main character, James, puts his hand into a filthy toilet. This moment is meant to symbolize James's guilt and punishment for his troubled relationship with his wife, Mary. Senior level designer Anna Oporska-Szybisz explained that they created a "rotten area" to convey themes of disgust. She described the emotional connection between the decaying environment and James’s feelings about Mary’s illness. The game emphasizes how her sickness deteriorated both her body and their love. The game's atmosphere features muted colors like yellow, rust, and dirt to enhance this feeling. Oporska-Szybisz also introduced a mechanic called "searching," where players literally have James reach into unpleasant places in search of items. In one scene, James is shown awkwardly putting his hand into a toilet to fetch a key item, highlighting his desperate situation. Additionally, the remake’s director stated that they needed to make the character Pyramid Head more aggressive and faster during his iconic fight scenes. This change aims to keep gameplay fresh while maintaining the essence of the original game.
