Singapore launches two new commands for enhanced cybersecurity
Singapore’s armed forces have launched two new commands focused on enhancing cyber security. This initiative, announced on March 18, aims to protect the country’s digital infrastructure from increasing cyber threats. The two new commands are the Defence Cyber Command and the SAF C4 and Digitalisation Command (SAFC4DC). They are part of the Digital and Intelligence Service, which is Singapore’s fourth military service. Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen emphasized that the rise in cyber threats makes this move necessary. The Defence Cyber Command will combine existing cyber security efforts to better address hostile digital threats. It aims to safeguard critical public services and infrastructure from cyber attacks. The SAFC4DC will focus on developing digital tools to improve military operations and incorporate advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and cloud computing. Rear-Admiral Yong Wei Hsiung, a key official in the new structure, stated that clearer missions will improve collaboration and operational effectiveness across military units. The SAF AI Centre, part of the SAFC4DC, will work on integrating artificial intelligence into military functions. Minister Ng highlighted past cyber incidents, such as the 2017 breach of defense portals and recent attacks on other government systems. He noted that improving cyber defenses is essential to keep the nation secure from both state and non-state threats. The Defence Cyber Command will collaborate with other government bodies and the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore to enhance national cyber defenses. Senior Lieutenant-Colonel Benjamin Lim leads a new Cyber Protection Group aimed at strengthening partnerships across sectors. About 500 national servicemen are already working in these commands, focusing on cyber security and digital technologies. Minister Ng concluded that this step is vital for ensuring the safety and resilience of Singapore’s critical digital infrastructure.
