Singapore's niche jumbo HDB flats: rare, roomy, and pricey
Singapore's Housing and Development Board is reviewing its flat conversion scheme that created about 2,900 jumbo flats, after a Telok Blangah unit was listed for S$2.18 million in September, prompting concerns over price inflation in the resale market. These rare units, formed by merging two adjoining flats, offer spacious living but face challenges including shorter leases, financing difficulties, and a limited buyer pool. Owners cite flexibility for multi-generational families and rental income as key attractions, though selling can be difficult due to age and location. The scheme began in the late 1980s to address oversupply, but experts say it may no longer be relevant as resale prices have risen significantly. HDB has not disclosed details of its review, with 408 resale transactions recorded between 2016 and 2025.
