Singapore's PM promises government support for rising costs

Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong addressed rising costs during a visit to Aljunied GRC on March 23. He acknowledged that cost pressures are a global issue but stressed that the government can assist residents in Singapore. Wong made these comments while meeting about 2,000 seniors at the Seniors' Connect event. Wong highlighted support measures from the national budget, such as Community Development Council vouchers, aimed at easing the cost of living. He expressed his hope that these initiatives would help residents manage their expenses. He also encouraged seniors to remain active and involved in community programs. During his visit, Wong launched an SG60 time capsule featuring 60 items significant to the local community. He later participated in a walkabout at Serangoon North market, where he engaged with residents for about an hour. The boundaries of Aljunied GRC were recently redrawn, affecting nearly 4,000 voters who will move to Tampines GRC in the upcoming election. This change marks the first alteration since 2011 when the opposition first won in Aljunied. The Workers' Party currently holds the seat with strong support, and the political landscape has seen new branch chairs appointed by the ruling People's Action Party since the last election.
