Singh criticizes corporate landlords for evicting tenants
Jagmeet Singh, the leader of the federal NDP, criticized corporate landlords during a campaign event in Toronto. He accused them of driving up rents and evicting tenants to increase profits. Singh's comments come as he supports renters facing difficulties. He was joined by Erin Filby, a renter who experienced issues with her bank, leading to late bill payments. She lives in a rent-controlled apartment but noted that new renters are charged much higher rates. Singh pointed out that Filby's building was purchased by Brookfield Investments when Mark Carney was the chair. Last year, Singh's party proposed a bill to stop corporations from buying affordable housing. The bill aimed to limit sales to individuals and non-profit organizations.
