Sinkhole closes section of Interstate 80 in New Jersey after mineshaft collapse
A section of Interstate 80 in North Jersey will remain closed indefinitely due to a 40-foot-deep sinkhole that formed on Thursday morning. The sinkhole, located on the eastbound side near mile marker 34, swallowed the shoulder but did not affect any vehicles. The New Jersey Department of Transportation has determined that the sinkhole was caused by the collapse of an abandoned mineshaft. This area has a history of iron mining, with several abandoned mines located beneath the highway. Repair timelines are not yet available, and commuters are being directed to alternative routes, including Route 46 and Route 15, to avoid the closure. Traffic disruptions are expected as the situation develops.
