A special investigation team (SIT) in Punjab has questioned Bikram Singh Majithia, a leader from the Shiromani Akali Dal party, about a drug case from 2021. The SIT alleges they found "suspicious financial transactions" connected to firms tied to Majithia and his family. Majithia was questioned for over six hours at the Patiala police lines. This investigation follows a Supreme Court order requiring his appearance. The SIT is looking into various financial activities both in India and abroad, including significant cash deposits in firms related to Majithia around the times of the alleged offences. Majithia was arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act in December 2021. He spent over five months in jail before being released on bail in August 2022. The SIT is also working to extradite three other individuals involved in the case who are currently living outside India. They plan to issue a Blue Corner notice to facilitate this process. Majithia has described the ongoing investigation as political revenge, noting the long time it has taken since the case was registered.
