Sivaganga woman sentenced for drowning her infant daughter
A woman and her accomplice have been given life sentences for killing a one-year-old child in Sivaganga. The Fast Track Court sentenced them on Thursday after they drowned the girl, named Muneeswari, in a water tank. This incident dates back to October 2014 when the police received a complaint about the tragic event. The main accused, Kannathal, 40, had marital issues that led her to return to her parents' home. During her stay, she began a relationship with Karthick Raja, 48. They had Muneeswari together, but Karthick grew distant after the birth. He reportedly told Kannathal he did not want a daughter. In a desperate act, Kannathal decided to kill her child. On October 3, 2014, she drowned Muneeswari in a water tank with Karthick's help. Following an investigation, both were arrested by Ilayankudi police. The case was moved to the Fast Track Mahila Court in Sivagangai for trial. Judge Gogul Murugan found them guilty and sentenced them to life imprisonment, along with a fine of ₹2,000 each. The local Superintendent of Police praised the investigators for their work in the case. Officials noted that this case is a stark reminder of the need for stronger child protection laws and the role of law enforcement in preventing such crimes.
