Small asteroid 2024 PT5 to briefly orbit Earth starting Sunday
A small asteroid, named 2024 PT5, will briefly orbit Earth starting Sunday. Measuring about 10 meters, it will be temporarily captured by Earth's gravity for nearly 57 days but will not complete a full orbit. The asteroid was discovered in August by astronomers at Complutense University of Madrid using a telescope in South Africa. Such mini moons are likely more common, but they are difficult to detect due to their small size. 2024 PT5 will not be visible to the naked eye or amateur telescopes, but can be observed with larger research-grade telescopes. It will leave Earth's orbit on November 25 and is expected to return in 2055.
