Small island nations nearly walk out of UN climate talks over funding issues
A negotiator for small island nations, Michai Robertson, revealed that his group nearly left the UN climate talks in Baku due to frustrations over funding. The Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) walked out after discussions ran 19 hours over time, highlighting their demands for more financial support. The walkout marked a historic moment, as it was the first time AOSIS has left the negotiations in 29 years. They seek stronger action against climate change and more funds to address its impacts, emphasizing their vulnerability to rising temperatures. After the walkout, AOSIS returned to the talks, resulting in a deal for $300 billion annually from developed nations until 2035. However, this amount fell short of their $500 billion request. AOSIS plans to push for increased financial commitments in future negotiations.
