Small Port Authority theater offers unique performances in NYC
A new theater experience in New York City is drawing attention away from Broadway. It’s located in the Port Authority Bus Terminal, a busy transit hub. Here, an 870-square-foot theater has become a popular spot for performances. This unique venue, which has 37 seats, is run by ChaShaMa, a nonprofit organization that converts unused spaces into artsy locations. Co-founder Anita Durst said the Port Authority has a lot of foot traffic, making it perfect for surprising performances. After taking over the space three years ago, ChaShaMa has hosted various artists, including dancers and beatboxers. The theater gained popularity after the Love Show theater group started performing there last year. They have presented various shows, including a dance piece inspired by the film "Kill Bill." Their upcoming show, "GI’Amour: A Tantalizing Cabaret Experience," opens on Friday and runs until April 27. Ticket sales have been strong, with most shows in March selling out. Director Angela Harriell mentioned they even added extra dates in April due to demand. Attendees experience an adventure just finding the theater. After purchasing tickets, they follow clues around the terminal to locate a hidden door. Often, a dancer in costume greets them at the entrance. The entrance itself is unusual, as it leads through a storage room filled with cleaning supplies. Inside, the show promises a mix of fun and emotional moments. Harriell described it as exciting, with bright costumes, but including deeper themes that may even move some audience members to tears. Tickets are priced at $49.87 and include two drinks, available online at EventBrite.com.
