Smith and Dezenzo still vying for Astros roster spots
The Houston Astros are finalizing their Opening Day roster, with prospects Cam Smith and Zach Dezenzo still in the running. Both players survived recent roster cuts, but it is uncertain if they will both make the team. On Saturday, the Astros released veteran outfielder Ben Gamel and informed infielder Luis Guillorme that he will not be on the Opening Day roster. This leaves three available spots for six players, including Smith and Dezenzo. The team will only keep either Dezenzo or Smith if they can guarantee daily playtime, likely in right field, due to Chas McCormick's poor performance this spring. Dezenzo has performed well, with impressive batting numbers in the Grapefruit League. He has experience playing right field, while Smith, a natural third baseman, was moved to right field to take advantage of his strong showing. Both players hit right-handed, which is something the Astros need, but managing their roster is tricky since they want a balanced lineup. Additionally, the Astros are deciding on who will play second base after Jose Altuve moved to left field. Brendan Rodgers is a strong candidate, and he is competing with Mauricio Dubón for playing time. The team also announced that relievers Jalen Beeks and Miguel Castro will not make the roster, with Beeks being released. Houston now has eight healthy relievers in camp, while minor-league pitcher Ryan Gusto may also help fill a bullpen spot.
