Somerton residents suffer from persistent foul odors

Residents in a Somerset town are struggling with strong, unpleasant smells that have affected their lives for years. The odour, which smells like a mix of gas and rotten eggs, has made it difficult for people to use a local community facility. Many residents live close to the Somerton Commercial Recycling Centre, where the smell has intensified. Gary Maughan, a community shed member, explained that the smell has driven away people who want to socialize. He mentioned that the smell could be hydrogen sulphide, which can cause health issues like headaches. Brian Kent, a local farmer, also shared his frustration. He has lived nearby since 2007 and notes that they have to close their windows in the evenings because of the smell. He worries that this situation cannot continue and needs a quick resolution. The Environment Agency is investigating the complaints and has asked the recycling centre to take steps to reduce the odours. They acknowledge the impact these smells have on the community.
