Somerville PorchFest introduces new safety measures for attendees
The annual Somerville PorchFest is set to return on May 10, welcoming thousands for a day of free outdoor music. Organizers announced new rules this year to ensure safety while keeping the festival's lively spirit. Changes include restrictions on where bands can perform. Musicians will not be allowed on over a dozen streets, especially busy main routes like Broadway and Highland Avenue. A complete list and map of these streets will be available on the event’s website. PorchFest features performances on porches, sidewalks, and yards, attracting people of all ages. Last year, the indie rock band Guster performed a special show, and there is speculation about their return this year, but no details are shared yet. To perform this year, bands need to complete a new application process by April 10. However, submitting an application does not guarantee a spot in the lineup. Bands must secure a performance address before applying, as stated by organizers. Gregory Jenkins, director of the Somerville Arts Council, emphasized the importance of these updates for safety and sustainability. The event will now have festival ambassadors and an emergency management team to ensure everything runs smoothly. If it rains, PorchFest will be moved to Sunday, May 11. Organizers have collaborated with city officials to improve safety and organization, aiming to keep the festival enjoyable for years to come. A map with the locations of performances will be shared ahead of the event.
