South Fayette Lions are Trib HSSN's team of the week
The South Fayette Lions girls basketball team has been named the Trib HSSN team of the week. They are celebrating a successful season under Coach Bryan Bennett. The team has a record of 12-0 in their section and an overall record of 28-2. After losing to Peters Township in the WPIAL championship match, where they only scored 12 points in the second half, the Lions bounced back in the PIAA Class 5A girls basketball playoffs. They started strong with a 35-point win over Lower Dauphin and followed that with a 29-point victory against West York. They defeated District 6 champion Hollidaysburg by 18 points to reach the state semifinals. In a rematch against Peters Township, South Fayette led by two points at halftime. They took charge in the second half with a 7-0 run early in the third quarter. They ultimately won the game 50-36, securing their spot in the state finals for the second time in three years. Key players have helped the Lions achieve this success. In the playoffs, junior guard Ryan Oldaker, along with junior swing Juliette Leroux, have been standout scorers. In the final match against Peters Township, Lailah Wight led the team with 14 points, while Oldaker contributed 12. Last year, the South Fayette team faced challenges but managed to clinch their third consecutive district title. They overcame tough competition and reached the state playoffs. However, they lost in the second round to Oakland Catholic. Now, the Lions are looking ahead to a tough matchup against Archbishop Wood, a dominant team in state basketball. The Lions are aiming to avenge their earlier loss and add to their achievements on this exciting postseason journey.
