Southmoreland freshman receives second Division I scholarship offer
Jackson Mickens, a freshman from Southmoreland High School, is making waves in football. He has received two Division I scholarship offers already. Last week, Miami (Ohio) offered him, adding to the offer he got from Akron in January. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound player had an impressive season last year. He caught 38 passes for 485 yards and six touchdowns. On defense, he made 45 tackles, with 11 sacks and three forced fumbles. In basketball, five players from Franklin Regional were chosen to play in the 28th Cager Classic all-star games on April 5. The event will take place in Harrison Township. Connor Crossey and Jonah Johnston will represent the boys’ team, while Addison Musto, Toryn Fulton, and Madison DeRiggi will play for the girls’ team. The girls' game starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys' game at 7:30 p.m. A skills competition will occur the day before. The Kiski School football team has exciting plans for its first game of the 2025 season. Under new coach Aaron Smetanka, the Cougars will travel to Dublin, Ireland, to play against the Junior Irish Wolfhounds on August 22. The team will arrive two days earlier for a pep rally and tailgate. Annie Czajkowski, a junior at Norwin, recently shined at the New Balance Nationals track and field meet in Boston. She set a new school record in the mile with a time of 5 minutes, 3.54 seconds, finishing eighth in her heat. Czajkowski now holds records in multiple events, including the 800- and 3,200-meter races. In volleyball news, Latrobe moved up to No. 4 in the Western Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association poll for Class 3A, after a strong start to the spring season. Norwin dropped to No. 6, while Penn-Trafford fell to No. 7. Derry remains steady at No. 8 in Class 2A. Additionally, Latrobe junior Andy Tatsch received a Division I offer from Dartmouth.
