SpaceX developing gigabit-capable Starlink dishes for customers
SpaceX is working on a new Starlink dish that aims to provide gigabit internet speeds. This is a significant upgrade from the current average download speeds of about 200 megabits per second (Mbps). The update was discussed during a recent webinar for Starlink resellers. To access these faster speeds, customers will likely need to purchase the new dish. Additionally, SpaceX plans to upgrade its Starlink satellite constellation, which will involve using a wider range of radio frequencies for internet service. However, the company is still waiting for approval from the FCC to proceed with these upgrades. If everything goes smoothly, the new gigabit dish could be available later this year, depending on the success of SpaceX’s Starship vehicle in launching new satellites. Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX's President, mentioned that the next generation of Starlink technology could deliver speeds up to 2 gigabits. Initially, SpaceX might target business customers with the gigabit service before offering it to regular consumers. The company has also announced plans to release a new flat high-performance dish for enterprise customers, reducing the price of the existing model to $1,499. Alongside the new gigabit dish, SpaceX is preparing another model to follow the current Starlink Mini dish, which is priced at $499 in the US. Satellite experts indicate that users will need the new dish to access gigabit speeds, as the current hardware doesn't support the necessary technology. However, there may still be improvements for existing dish users due to planned upgrades for the Starlink network, which could enhance performance even for older models.
