Speculation of military coup grows in Bangladesh
Concerns are growing about a possible military coup in Bangladesh due to increasing political instability. Discussions about military intervention have become more common, especially as tensions rise between the military, government, and student groups. Reports suggest that army units are moving into Dhaka, fueling worries that the military might take action against the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus. Intelligence reports indicate that military personnel, particularly from the 9th Division based in Savar, are gradually stationed in the capital. This has led to heightened speculation about a coup. A recent video of Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman has also added to these concerns. In the video, he warned that the country's independence could be at risk if divisive politics continue. General Waker emphasized the need for unity and warned against public disputes that could threaten the nation's sovereignty. He stated that the army aims to maintain peace and harmony, and indicated that all citizens should work together. Despite the rising fears, the army has denied any intentions of staging a coup. In a speech to senior military officials, General Waker urged calm and dismissed rumors about military action. He stressed that public safety and avoiding provocative situations are priorities for the army. The general called on citizens to be cautious of false information and to focus on the nation’s collective well-being. Amid these tensions, Muhammad Yunus, chief advisor to the interim government, is expected to address the nation tonight to discuss these developments during the celebrations of Independence Day and Eid-ul-Fitr.
