Spring federal election announced for Ottawa-Gatineau area
In eastern Ontario and western Quebec, most of the local Members of Parliament (MPs) are running for re-election. This is happening in a spring election that comes earlier than expected. Twenty seats in the House of Commons are available. This election follows a review that changed the boundaries and names of many ridings. As a result, some voters in Ontario may find themselves in a different district compared to the February provincial election. Voters are advised to check their riding with Elections Canada. The election date is set months before the legal deadline of October 20, 2025. In the last election in 2021, voters elected 13 Liberal MPs and seven Conservative MPs. Most of these MPs will run again, with a couple of exceptions. Notably, Liberal MP Francis Drouin will not seek re-election, leaving the Prescott-Russell-Cumberland riding open. Recently, the Liberal Party removed Nepean MP Chandra Arya’s nomination as the election approaches. A list of candidates for the 2025 election is available, along with details about the changes in each riding.
